The Exceptional Virgin by St. Ephrem the Syrian

“The womb and Sheol shouted with joy and cried out
about Your resurrection. The womb that was sealed
conceived You; Sheol that was secured,
brought You forth. Against nature,
the womb conceived, and Sheol yielded.
Sealed was the grave which they entrusted
with keeping the dead man. Virginal was the womb
that no man knew. The virginal womb
and the sealed grave like trumpets
for a deaf people shouted in its ear.”

Ephrem the Syrian: Hymns on Nativity 10, 7-8; CSCO 1987, 59; CWS, p. 130.

“Praise to You [who] purify Your flock
as Your mother, and Your chaste women
as the one who bore You, and Your handmaidens
as the one who nursed You. From them and from her
and from all of us glory be to Your name!”

Ephrem the Syrian: Hymns on Nativity 12, 11, CSCO 1987, 65; CWS, p.135

“If difficult things for You are not difficult
but easy, so that the womb conceived You
without intercourse, and without seed
the womb gave birth to You, it is easy for the mouth
to be fruitful and to multiply Your great glory.”

Ephrem the Syrian: Hymns on Nativity 15, 6; CSCO 187, 74; CWS, p. 146.

  1. Reblogged this on The Authentic Jesus ( The Transforming Jesus) and commented:
“One cannot always tell what it is that keeps us shut in, confines us, seems to bury us, but still one feels certain barriers, certain gates, certain walls. is all this imagination, fantasy? ….”
