Virgin Mary and Eden by John Chrysostom

“Therefore he called it “Eden” or “virgin soil”, because this virgin (the soil of paradise) was a type of that other Virgin. As the first soil produced for us the garden of paradise without any seed, so the Virgin gave birth to Christ for us without receiving any manly seed.

In case a Jew should ask you how the Virgin could give birth, an we him thus: How could a virgin soil make wondrous plants spring up? For, in the Hebrew language, “Eden” means “Virgin soil”.”

John Chrysostom, The Changing of Names 2, 3; PG SI, 129.
