How was Christ born of the Father by John Chrysostom

Now, when speaking of the Virgin, even though I do not know how he was born of her, nevertheless I affirm that he was generated; so I do not discard the fact simply because I do not know how it happened. You should do the same, then, when speaking of the Father. Even if you do not know how the Son was generated, nevertheless you profess that he was generated. Should a heretic ask you how the Son was generated by the Father, brush aside the essence of his question and say to him: “Come down from heaven, show me how he was born of the Virgin, and then ask me your question!” Hold firm on this point, press him; do not allow him the comfort of with drawing and taking refuge in the labyrinth of his arguments.”

John Chrysostom, The Obscurity of Prophecies 1, 2; PG 56, 166-67
