Mary’s simple faith by Ambrose of Milan

“She does not appear to have doubted the event but asked how it would take place. Clearly, if she asked how it would happen, she must have believed in its fulfillment. Thus she merited to hear the words, “Blessed are you, because you have believed” (Lk 1:45).
Yes, truly blessed for having surpassed the priest [Zechariah]. While the priest denied, the Virgin rectified the error. No wonder that the Lord, wishing to rescue the world, began his work with Mary. Thus she, through whom salvation was being prepared for all people, would be the first to receive the promised fruit of salvation.”

Ambrose of Milan, Expositio in Lucam 2, 17; PL 15, 1640.

Virgin Mary’s simple faith brought her blessings and glad tidings. Because of her obedience and trust in God, He chose her to participate in the world’s salvation. Obedience needs humility. As humility is a virtue, it needs practice and change of heart. But with no humility and chnage of heart we cannot obey God. With no obedience we cannot be in communion with Him. Chosing not commune with God, means to cut oneself from the source of life. No life, no glade tidings, i.e. dead. Let’s ask God to give us to believe, chnage our hearts and trust in Him as she did.
