Jesus Christ took his cross alone by Ambrose of Milan

“For her part, Mary did not fail to live up to her station as the Mother of Christ. When the apostles fled, she stood before the Cross and gazed tenderly on the wounds of her Son, because she was waiting, not for her Son’s death, but for the salvation of the world.
Did she, the hall of the King, who knew that the world would be redeemed by her Son’s death, think that her own death could add anything to the grace given to all? But Jesus, for the redemption of all, had no need of assistance, not he who had said, “I am like a man without help, alone among the dead” (Ps 88:6). He accepted his mother’s affection, but he did not seek human assistance.”

Ambrose of Milan, Expositio in Lucam 10, 132; SC 52, 200
