If the Gospel is lying about this, why believe it when it states that Jesus said, “Woman, what have you to do with me?” Why do these wretches not sincerely believe that the Lord responded in this way, not to a stranger, but to his Mother, and why do they not piously try to find out why he answered in this way?”
St. Augustine holds that the motherhood of the Virgin Mary is central to the Christian faith. If Jesus had no mother, then he would not be a real man. If Jesus was not a real man, we are still dead.
