“Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet’? If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?” (Mat 22:41-45)
Cyril of Alexandria,
Do you see how he plainly showed Himslef to be the Lord of David? How, then, could he who is from the seed of David be David’s Lord and sit on the same throne with the Father, unless he were God, who put on everything that belongs to human beings? He did, indeed, show that the one who was born from the Virgin, that is himself, was both son of David and Lord. However, those who heard this testimony were confounded and did not contradict him, as the evangelist says in the narrative: “For no one was able to reply to his word and dared from that time to ask him any more questions” (Matt. 22:46).
