Let the women hasten to come here, because here is a woman who does not point to the tree of death but gives birth to the fruit of life. Let the virgins hasten as well, because a Virgin has given birth without harming her virginity. For the Baby has come forth, leaving the curtains of the womb intact behind him, leaving the workshop of nature as he found it and adding grace as well. Let mothers hasten, because a Virgin Mother has replaced the tree of disobedience with the tree of life. Let daughters hasten, because the obedience of a daughter cancels the shame of a mother’s disobedience.

Proclus of Constantinople, Homily 4, 2; PG 65, 709 C-712 A.
