“Mary, who gave birth to God, remained a virgin to the end [in order to be a model for] all to come after her”

Athanasius, De virginitate, in Le Musèon 42: 244

The fact that God chose the Virgin Mary to be the mother of his Only-begotten Son shows that there was something unique about her. This uniqueness makes her a role model for all Christians. For instance, when the angel appeared to her to tell her the good news that God would incarnate through her, she accepted. This acceptance is obedience to God’s will. Virgin Mary’s obedience was not just saying “yes” to God but also doing His will.
