St. Jerome sees Virgin Mary in these verses a cloud, as a prefiguration of Christ and His mother.
“In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
Psalms 78:14
And all the night with a light of fire.”
” An oracle concerning Egypt.
Isaiah 19:1
Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud and comes to Egypt;
and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence,
and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.”
“As for the light cloud, we must either interpret it rightly as the body of the Savior, because it was light and not weighted down with any sin, or surely we ought to see in the light cloud holy Mary, who was not weighed down by any manly seed.”
Jerome, . Tractatus de Psalmo 77, 14; CCL 78, 72.
